PURPOSE: Line dancing is choreographed dancing, but also a fun form of exercise. It gets your heart pumping and your brain working, all while being part of a social activity. One research study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that dancing can reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
MEETING DATES/TIME:
All classes meet at the Main Clubhouse for one hour. Come to dance or just to watch.

Monday 10:00am, Beginner Plus – This class is geared toward line dancers who have some experience as well as knowledge of steps and terminology. In this class the steps are fun and varied.
Tuesday 10:00am, Beginner Plus – This class focuses on popular line dances taught with a team effort. We take our time teaching a variety of dances and incorporate a new dance every few weeks to keep the class fresh.
Wednesday 10:00am, Beginner – This class helps boost your confidence as you join in the fun and you will find that other dancers are more than willing to help you.
Wednesday 11:00am, Basic Steps – This class is for learning the names, movements and counts of steps commonly used in line dancing. It is also a time for breaking down and working on any of the line dances for individual dancers who would like extra help.
Thursday 10:00am, Just Dance – In this class the music plays continuously. Dances are announced before every song and dancers “just dance”, going from one dance to the next. This class includes dances from all other line dance classes taught at Water Oak. Review of steps to any of the dances can be done before or after class or during the Basic Steps class on Wednesdays.

Ten good reasons to line dance:
- It’s Just the Best Fun
Line dancing is the best fun. You will meet a lot of people who love fun and who love line dancing. It brings smiles to people’s faces along with a lot of laughter.
- You’ll Make New Friends
Line dancing is a natural icebreaker. It’s a great way to meet people and to make new friends. You can always be assured of a warm hearty welcome in the classes. Line dance social events are also full of friendly folk.
- You’ll Enjoy the Exercise
Line dancing can be as gentle or as energetic as you want it to be. It is reported that it helps to increase muscle tone and coordination, lowers the risk of coronary heart disease, improves cholesterol levels, strengthens bones, reduces blood pressure, and keeps dancers mentally fit. It is an amazing way to exercise, on a regular basis, to very pleasant music. Line dancing is a great way to stay in shape. If you don’t like the gym, line dancing can bring the fun back into your exercise.
- It’s Easy to Learn to Line Dance
For most folks it takes about 3 weeks before feeling confident with their first dance. If it takes longer, don’t worry – how quickly it takes you to pick it up, initially, has little bearing on how good you will be a year later. We all learn at different paces. We all encourage each other to continue progressing. Dancers stand in a line and move in unison. Our classes cater to most levels of dancer and for most tastes in music.
- You Don’t Need a Partner
Line dancing is one of the most fun forms of dancing out there. It can be done anywhere, and doesn’t require a partner. It can feel easier for some if they come along with a friend, but please feel reassured that this isn’t necessary as the minute that you walk through the doors of our classes you will find a room full of friends that you haven’t yet met!
- It’s a Feel-Good Factor
Line dancing builds confidence by giving a sense of success and achievement when you master different stages and levels of the dance as well as mastering the complete dance.
- Line Dancing Improves Your Memory
It is common knowledge, amongst line dancers, that line dancing helps to train memory power. We need to memorize a step sequence and to keep repeating this sequence. Line dancing trains the brain to stay active by not only memorizing the steps, but by also coordinating the physical limbs to the music.
- You’ll Feel a Sense of Achievement
General research has shown that line dancing improves people’s well-being, their coordination and their confidence. You will find that as you learn more new dances your confidence will grow. Members often talk of the positive feeling when they master new dance steps.
- It Relieves Stress
Line dancing helps to release the neurotransmitter endorphins, which serve to reduce stress and cause our bodies to feel calm, happy and optimistic. We know that when the body feels good, the mind does, too! All the stress related problems that are on your mind seem to disappear when you are actively enjoying line dancing. This in turn lightens mood and reduces the risk of depression.
- Passing It On!
In no time at all, we are sure that you will be passing on your love of line dancing to your friends and family. It’s a fact that dancers become really engaged with line dancing in a very short time. Often, they join more than one class.
As you can see, line dancing has many positive benefits for dancers.
So, come and join our friendly classes on your own or bring your family and friends with you and give it a go.
We look forward to seeing and welcoming you on the dance floor!
