PURPOSE: Veterans come together to aid & honor veterans & their families
MEETING DATES: 2nd Wednesday of the month
MEETING TIME: 4 p.m.
Water Oak Veterans Club was formed on November 1, 1992 under the leadership of Bill Roy with 16 members. The first Commander elected was Jack Leineke.
Their first endeavor, in conjunction with Water Oak Management, was a Memorial Flag project made up of three flags to be erected in front of the Main Club House. The Water Oak Veterans Memorial was dedicated on May 30, 1994 through the efforts of the Water Oak Veterans Club, the Water Oak Veterans Auxiliary and Water Oak Management. It was dedicated to the honor of all veterans past, present and future. It is maintained by the W.O.V.C. officers and members. Regis LeClerc is in charge of coordinating the Memorial maintenance and make any repairs needed to the bricks placed there honoring our veterans. Any resident of Water Oak can honor any veteran, family members or friends, by contacting Regis LeClerc at 352-751-7166 for information or to order a brick to be placed on the Memorial.
The National Flag and State of Florida Flag are displayed as dictated by the U.S. Flag Code. The flag of the Water Oak Veterans Club is displayed at half-staff for seven days at the passing of any club member. Also, displayed is the Water Oak Veterans Auxiliary Flag.
In 2004 improvements to the Memorial were approved by WOVC and Water Oak Management due to safety reasons. A series of Golf Tournaments were organized and $4000.00 was raised for the needed renovations. Gabriele Umbel, General Manager, got behind the veterans by soliciting the help of contractors. The contractors were generous with the donations of their labor and expertise. Ron Sherrill, Mike Clarke and Dave Verhagen did a lot of the coordinating. Veterans, Auxiliary Members and residents of Water Oak donated their time and energy. A bricklayer installed 135 memorial bricks and paving stones. Member, Regis LeClerc, donated the sculpture of an eagle that seems to stand guard over the park. In January 2007, the veterans rededicated the park, with Commander Mike Clarke hosting the ceremony.
